To get new abilities in Path of Exile, you will usually have to equip stone into sockets in your gear. Any course can use any ability, but gems do have stat and level requirements. Stone can only be outfitted in slots of the same colour. Skill gems: All these add an attack, charm, projectile, or trap/mine. Support gems: These gems modify supportable skills when outfitted at a linked socket (one that has a line drawn to another socket). The service gem must be compatible with all the gem at the connected socket in order to have an effect. As an example, a service gem that affects projectiles will not do anything to some linked melee attack gem. Make sure your linked gems are compatible! Equipped gems also level up as you earn XP, getting ten percent of their foundation XP awarded from monster kills. Your character encounters an XP penalty when revisiting lower level regions, but that penalty doesn't apply to stone.
